Two-stroke mix goes stale and separates within weeks: past a month it starts poorly, fouls the engine and makes it run hot. Mix small batches, keep to the ratio in the manual, and drain the tank before long storage.
Cutting dust clogs the filter fast. A clogged filter means higher fuel use, lost power and hard starting. Pop the cover off without tools, tap it out or wash it in soapy water, and dry it fully before refitting.
Grass and soil build up around the cylinder and stop air from cooling the engine — the number-one cause of overheating. After each session, blow or brush out the engine housing and the air intake grilles.
A dull blade strains the engine and kicks back dangerously on woody stems; a cracked blade must be replaced, never reused. Before each use, check the edge, look for cracks, and make sure the blade nut is tight.
At the start of the season, pull the plug: black, wet electrodes point to a rich mix or a dirty filter. Clean the deposits, set the gap per the manual, and replace it if the insulator is cracked.
Before winter, run the engine until it uses up the fuel in the carburettor (stagnant two-stroke gums up the diaphragms). Clean the machine, grease the cutting head, and store it dry and away from frost.
